What is DevOps Engineer

  • DevOps is like the conductor of a tech orchestra, bringing harmony to the software development and IT operations process. It’s a set of practices that automates and streamlines how software is built, tested, and delivered, allowing companies to release new features faster and with fewer hiccups. Imagine it as a superhero cape for businesses, ensuring their tech systems run smoothly, adapt to changes seamlessly, and recover quickly if something goes awry. DevOps values collaboration, automation, and continuous improvement, making companies more agile, efficient, and resilient. In big companies, having a DevOps role is like having a superhero on standby, ensuring the tech gears turn smoothly and keeping everything in tune for a top-notch performance.
  • High Demand and High Pay: One of the most compelling reasons to learn DevOps is the tremendous demand for skilled professionals in this field. With more and more organisations migrating from traditional server-based infrastructures to cloud environments, organisations are actively seeking DevOps experts to help them accelerate their development processes, reduce downtime, and enhance overall software quality. According to Seek, the projected job growth in the next 5 years will be over 27%.
  • High Return on Investment: Due to this high demand, DevOps professionals often command competitive starting salaries ( which would typically start over 90k+ AUD and average around 130k+ AUD in Australia) and enjoy opportunities for career advancement.
Less Coding Involved: DevOps emphasises tools and practices that streamline processes, reducing the need for extensive coding skills. For most small to mid size businesses and even internal teams in a large organisation, the existing 3rd party tools are efficient in solving most of the business process problems and only require DevOps engineers writing configuration files. When existing tools cannot solve all the problems, it is often a requirement for DevOps engineers to write scripts or automations instead of developing a complicated service.
  • Growth Path for Developers: Learning DevOps is essential for developers because it complements their work seamlessly. DevOps practices enable developers to streamline the deployment process, automate repetitive tasks, and ensure that their code is efficiently and reliably delivered to production, which can help developers boost productivity and achieve higher business impact.
  • Fulfilment in Problem-Solving: DevOps professionals often experience a deep sense of fulfilment in their roles. This stems from the ability to see the direct impact of their work on the organisation’s success. DevOps practices lead to faster releases, fewer errors, and improved collaboration, which can help the business scale, boost job satisfaction, and provide a greater sense of purpose.
  • Job security: DevOps job security is strong due to their unique skill set in software development, system administration, and automation, making them essential for organizations prioritizing efficiency and innovation. With growing business adoption of DevOps practices, demand for these skilled professionals is consistently high, ensuring stability and offering ample opportunities for career advancement in a dynamic industry.

What does the career path look like for DevOps?

The career paths in DevOps offer a range of opportunities for professionals to progress, specialise, and contribute significantly to the productivity, efficiency, reliability, and scalability of modern software systems. It has four independent technical career path:

  • DevOps Engineering Path
  • SRE Engineering Path
  • Cloud Engineer Path
  • DevOps/SRE Consultant Path.

The choice of path depends on individual interests, strengths, and career goals.

  • Junior DevOps Engineer:
    • The entry-level role focused on learning DevOps practices, tools, and workflows. Responsibilities include assisting with automation and collaboration efforts.
    • The base pay typically starts from $90k+ in Australian major cities
    • It usually takes 0.5-2 years to get promoted to the next level depending on your achievement and experience.
  • DevOps Engineer
    • Mid-level role involving more complex automation, infrastructure management, code release management, and collaboration with development and operational teams. Engineers typically work on continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, dev productivity, infrastructure as code, configuration management and automate repetitive tasks.
    • This role’s average salary is around $130k+
    • It can take as low as 1-2 years, but as high as 5-10 years to get promoted to the next level, depending on your impact.
    • Many past Career Master Bootcamp Students got this role after completing the course and projects.
  • Senior DevOps Engineer
    • Experienced professionals are responsible for designing and optimising DevOps processes. They often lead complex team projects, mentor junior team members, and implement advanced DevOps solutions.
    • As a Senior DevOps, you can expect more than 160k base pay on average and the higher end can go beyond $200k+.
    • The promotion to the next level really depends on if you have the willingness to take on more complex cross-team projects and to solve problems at a cross-team or org level, but you can also stay at a Senior level if a Principal role does not suit you.
  • Principal DevOps Engineer
    • Architects define the overall DevOps strategy for an organisation, including selecting tools, designing pipelines, and ensuring scalability and security. They collaborate with leadership to align DevOps with business goals.
    • The base bay can vary significantly depending on the business but usually go beyond $200k+ in a large global organisation.
  • SRE Engineering Path
    • focuses more on the reliability, performance, scalability, and cost of running the cloud application and has a similar seniority setup.
  • Cloud Engineering Path
    • focus more on the infrastructure, networking, and security that facilitate the rest of the Software and DevOps teams hosting cloud services and applications.
